Stem cells (unspecialized cells) have the ability to self-replicate and transform into an array of specialized cells. These cells have two unique properties: self-renewal capacity and the ability to undergo differentiation pathways or enter terminal divisions to yield an organized tissues or functional blood cells. Both embryonic and adult stem cells, therefore, can be used to generate healthy tissues and replace the damaged ones. For instance, they can be used to produce insulin-secreting cells for the treatment of type I diabetes, to generate liver cells for patients with liver failure, to treat neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, to cure myocardial infarction etc. Thus, we envisage a possibility to restore normal functions with the application of stem cells.
Stem cell research focuses on the potential applications of stem cells. This advancing field of science is making the possibility of cell-based therapies to treat myriad diseases. Prof. Rao has published more than 80 research papers in various national and international journals and has one patent and edited/ authored 20 books. Prof. Rao worked as a visiting Scientist at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, USA. He visited CSIRO and University of Adelaide, Australia and University of Singapore and Pokhra University, Nepal as a visiting faculty. He has guided more than 25 students for M.Phil. and 15 Ph.D. students. Prof. Rao is the founder General Secretary of Association of Biotechnology and Pharmacy and Editor for Current Trends in Biotechnology and Pharmacy. is Research Associate at the Centre for Biotechnology, Achraya Nagarjuna University, Guntur, India. He Received the Master's degree in the area of Biotechnology from Acharya Nagarjuna University, India. He was awarded the first prize in Young Scientist for regenerative Medicine and National Seminar on Regenerative Medicine and Tissue Engineering. He has researched in the area of stem cell has many publications in both international and national journal.
